Clemson took the opening kickoff and had a promising drive that reached the USC 30. The Tigers were moving thru the air and on a first and ten from the 30, Sammy Watkins took a lateral from Tajh Boyd, pulled up and fired a pass to the end zone. But he it hung in the air and was picked off by safety Brison Williams.
Energized by their defense, the Gamecock offense went on an 80 yard, 17 play drive that ate up over eight minutes off the clock. The Gamecocks were 3 for 3 on third down conversions. Connor Shaw completed 5 of 7 passes for 61 yards and finished off the drive with a 3 yard touchdown run. USC leads 7-0 with 4:23 left in the quarter.
The Tiger offense was not demoralized by its long rest. The Tigers rolled right down the field going 75 yards in 4 plays. A 57 yard pass from Tajh Boyd to Sammy Watkins put the Tigers at the Gamecock 12 and two plays later Boyd ran in from the 8 for the touchdown. It’s 7-7 with 2:45 left in the quarter.
The Gamecocks were forced to punt on their next possession but Adam Humphries let the ball bounce off his chest and the Gamecocks recovered at the Clemson 39. As the quarter expired, the Gamecocks were on the Tigers’ 9 yard line.
