Make it three in a row and 40 in a row for the Christ Church Cavaliers of Grenville. Friday they defeated Carvers Bay 28-21 for their third straight 1A-Division 2 state championship and their 40th straight win. The Cavaliers are closing in on the state record for consecutive wins which Summerville holds at 42.
It was a track meet in the first half when all the points were scored. The teams exchanged big plays to open the scoring. Devin Cuttino put the Bears up with a 30 yard touchdown run only to see Rudy Johnstone catch a 65 yard touchdown pass from Demetrius Anthony two minutes later to tie the game.
The teams continued to exchange touchdowns with Christopher Carter’s 3 yard run putting Carvers Bay back on top but the Cavs answered 22 seconds later on a 60 yard run by Dorien Dickey.
The Cavaliers took their first lead early in the second quarter on a 5 yard run by quarterback Demetrius Anthony but the Bears pulled even in less than a minute on an 80 yard Cuttino run.
With the game tied at 21, Christ Church went on a 9 play, 76 yard drive to take the lead with Anthony running in from 11 yards out. Little did we know that 28-21 halftime lead would hold up throughout the second half.
Christ Church had a pair of scoring opportunities in the second half but missed a pair of field goals. Carvers Bay never threatened in the second half with their deepest penetration being the Christ Church 43. A fumble and an interception ended their last two possessions and preserved the 28-21 win for the Cavaliers.
Christ Church finished the season at 14-0 while Carvers Bay finished up at 12-2.
