1984 turned out to be the greatest season in USC history to that point with the Gamecocks rising to #2 in the polls before a shocking loss to Navy. That cost the Gamecocks a spot in the Orange Bowl and a chance at the national championship.
The Gamecocks went to Death Valley that November looking to end a four game losing streak to the Tigers. Things looked dreary for the Gamecocks later in the game as they trailed 21-15. But with Mike Hold in the game at quarterback, the Gamecocks put together a long drive capped by Hold’s one yard touchdown run that gave USC their first 10 win season.
