It was a feel good day all the way around for USC Saturday afternoon at Williams-Brice Stadium. The Gamecocks easily handled Coastal Carolina 70-10, did not suffer any injuries and are now free to focus on next week’s Palmetto Brawl game with Clemson.
The 70 points are the most for the Gamecocks during the Steve Spurrier era and it’s the fourth time a Spurrier team has scored at least 70 points in a game. The other three times occurred at Florida where his high point mark was 82. It’s the fifth time a USC team scored at least 70 points in a game.
The Gamecocks rolled up 639 total yards matching that high mark under Spurrier, and their points total was their highest since pinning 77 on Kent in 1995. They scored on 10 of their 11 possessions that did not include possessions at the end of a half.
Quarterback Connor Shaw looked like his old self throwing and running and said afterwards he’s feeling the best he has since the Tennessee game. Playing only into the second quarter, Shaw was 8-11 for 115 yards and 1 touchdown and rushed for 39 yards and a score. It’s the 25th win for Shaw as a starter making him USC’s new leader in that category.
Dylan Thompson, who Steve Spurrier plans to play next week against Clemson, also was 8-11 passing for 140 yards and 2 touchdowns. Spurrier employed a total of five quarterbacks in the game. In fact, he went all the way thru his bench in getting players in. Four different running backs got carries with freshman Jamari Smith leading the way with 103 yards on 10 carries. And 11 different receivers caught passes with Shaq Roland snaring a game high 4 catches for 72 yards and a touchdown.
Pharoh Cooper had a big day being used as a receiver and in the Wildcat. He finished with 168 all purpose yards and scored a touchdown rushing and receiving.
Spurrier now has 75 wins as USC’s head coach and his team will take a 17 game home winning streak into next week’s battle with the Tigers.
The Gamecocks improve to 9-2 overall giving them four consecutive seasons with at least 9 wins. Coastal falls to 10-2 but not all the news was bad for the Chants. With Charleston Southern losing to Liberty, Coastal wins the automatic bid to the FCS playoffs from the Big South. The Chants shared the league title with Liberty but beat the Flames in the regular season. They will learn Sunday if they get a first round bye.
