Coastal took the opening kickoff and completed and Alex Ross threw a 25 yard pass to Matt Hazel on the first play. But it was three and out after that and the Chants punted to the USC 15. The Gamecocks moved quickly with Connor Shaw running and passing the Gamecocks down the field. He hit Shaq Roland for a 35 yard scoring pass to put USC up 7-0.
After forcing another punt, the Gamecocks put another Garnet 6 on the board with freshman Jamari Smith running in from three yards out for his first career touchdown. That capped a drive of 63 yards in 9 plays and put USC up 14-0.
The Gamecocks forced a Coastal fumble on the next drive with Sharrod Golightly scooping and returning to the Coastal 8. Golightly was hit with an unsportsmanlike penalty after the play and the ball was moved back to the 23. A couple of runs and a pass to Damiere Byrd put the ball at the 1 and Shaw sneaked in from there for a 21-0 lead.
The USC defense came up big again on the next possession stuffing Coastal on fourth and one from the Coastal 34. Dylan Thompson entered the game at quarterback for USC and fired a 34 yard scoring pass to Nick Jones on his first play. That was Thompson’s first pass since the third quarter of the Missouri game and it made it 28-0 USC.
USC had 215 yards in the quarter to 71 for Coastal.
End of quarter…USC 28-0.
