For the third time this season, Clemson scored a touchdown within the first five plays of the game. This time it was on the 5th play, a 33 yard pass from Tajh Boyd to Sammy Watkins. It was Boyd’s 18th touchdown pass of the season and Watkins’ 6th touchdown catch. Boyd also had a 17 yard pass to Martavis Bryant on the drive. Clemson 7-0.
The Cavaliers responded a couple of series later with a nicely executed 10 play, 54 yard drive. Quarterback David Watford ran in from 6 yards out for the score. On the drive, Watford passed for 25 yards and rushed for 15. It’s a 7-7 game with 5:00 left in the quarter.
Clemson wasted no time answering that touchdown with a six play, 75 yard drive capped by a 2 yard run by CJ Davidson. There were two big pass plays on the drive. Boyd connected with Rod McDowell on 3rd and 4 for 27 yards to the Virginia 42. On the next play Boyd hit Bryant for 37 yards to the 5. Clemson 14-7 with 2:59 left in the quarter.
The Tigers had a late scoring threat in the quarter thwarted by Anthony Harris who intercepted Boyd trying to go deep to Bryant at the Cavalier 7 on the next to last play of the quarter. Harris, who leads the nation in picks, now has 6 on the season.
End of quarter…Clemson 14-7.
