Clemson got a huge break early in the fourth quarter forcing a fumble by Albert Reid and recovering deep in Maryland territory. Bashaud Breeland delivered the hit that jarred the ball loose and Spencer Shuey picked it up and advanced it 9 yards to the 22. From their Boyd did most of the damage with a 13 yard run and two plays later scoring on a 5 yard run. That was the 112th touchdown for Boyd in his career rushing and passing tying him for the ACC record with Phillip Rivers. Clemson leads 26-13.
Later in the quarter the Tigers put together another scoring drive with a 41 yard pass from Boyd to Martavis Bryant to the Maryland 5 the big play. Rod McDowell scored two plays later from the three for a 33-13 lead. That was his first touchdown of the season.
The Terps responded with a quick drive of their own capped by a 5 yard scoring pass from Rowe to Amba Etta-Tawo to trim the lead to 33-20.
But it took only two plays for Clemson to strike again. McDowell broke free on a 45 yard touchdown run for his second score of the quarter and Clemson had a 40-20 lead.
Rowe threw a final touchdown pass with :09 left to to make the final score 40-27.
McDowell finished with a career high 30 carries for 161 yards. Boyd passed for 304 yards and Watkins set a Clemson record with 14 catches for 163 yards. Clemson had 552 total yards.
