Clemson made the first mistake of the second half with Watkins losing a fumble at his own own 23. The Terps, however, could not move the ball and had to go field goal which Brad Craddock drilled from 41 yards to make it a 16-10 Clemson lead.
On the Tigers’ next play, Rod McDowell coughs up the football at the Clemson 26 but again the Terps cannot move the football as Rowe extends his streak of incomplete passes to 8 including an interception. Craddock connects again from 41 yards to cut the lead to 16-13.
Not to be outdone on field goals, Clemson answered with Cantanzaro again wasting a drive that reached the Maryland 5. On third down Boyd tried to hit Watkins in the end zone on a post pattern but Shawn Petty defended the play. Cantanzaro hit a 24 yard field goal to put Clemson up 19-13.
The teams exchanged punts the rest of the quarter.
