The Terps continued their late first quarter drive and pushed into the Clemson red zone reaching the the seven. But on third down Rowe was intercepted in the end zone by freshman Jayron Kearse who returned the ball to the Clemson 25.
The Tigers turned that turnover into points but were not able to get into the end zone. Sammy Watkins was big on the drive with 4 catches for 51 yards as the Tigers reached the Maryland 8 where they were stopped on a third down swing pass to Rod McDowell. Cantanzaro was true from 25 yards to put Clemson back on top 9-7.
After forcing a punt, the Tigers had another promising drive into Maryland territory reaching the 20. But Boyd was sacked on second down and called for grounding on third down and the Tigers had to punt.
After forcing a Maryland punt, the Tigers finally got into the end zone just before halftime. The Tigers went 58 yards in 7 plays with a 30 yard pass to Watkins down to the Maryland keying the drive. Boyd eventually hit freshman tight end Jordan Leggett with a 5 yard scoring pass to give the Tigers a 16-7 halftime lead.
Boyd, who moved into second place in ACC history in passing yardage in the quarter, was 18-23 for 183 yards in the half. Watkins had 10 catches for 127 yards. McDowell rushed 17 times for 78 yards. Clemson had 294 yards in the half to 175 for the Terps.
