Tennessee forced a USC punt to open the quarter and then Worley sparked a drive that led to a field goal. He ran for 11 yards to convert on third down and later threw a 48 yard pass to Marquez North to the Gamecock 16. But the Vols would have to settle for a 33 yard field goal by Palardy to cut the lead to 21-20 with 10:11 left in the game.
The teams exchanged punts and then things got whacky. With 5:44 left, USC takes ball at its 12. Shaw throws incomplete on first down then is sacked on second down and injures his knee. Dylan Thompson comes in and completes a 5 yard pass and the Gamecocks have to punt.
Tennessee starts at its 45 and goes three and out and punts to the Gamecock 18 with 3:16 left. Tennessee has three time outs and the Gamecocks run the ball three times and have fourth and two on their own 26 when the Vols use their final time out. Steve Spurrier sends his office back onto the field and calls a time out twice while thinking about going for it. He eventually punts to the Vols 35 with 2:48 left.
Worley throws two incompletions and on third down he hits Marquez North for 39 yards to the Gamecock 26. Marlin Lane then carries the ball on four straight plays to the USC 2 and with three seconds to play, Palardy splits the uprights from 19 yards for the win.
Final Score…Tennessee 23-USC 21
