On the opening play of the half, Shaw breaks off a 17 yard run and draws a 15 yard penalty for a hit out of bounds to put the Gamecocks at the Tennessee 45. But on the next play, while rolling left and throwing across his body, Shaw is picked off for the first time this season and for the first time in 178 passes by Cameron Sutton at the UT 27 to kill the drive.
The Vols could do nothing on their possession and USC took the punt and put together a scoring drive of 66 yards in 12 plays. Mike Davis capped the drive with a 21 yard run after taking an option pitch from Shaw. Tennessee 17-14.
Tennessee mounted a drive to the USC 29 but came up empty when Palardy was wide left on a 46 yard field goal attempt.
The Gamecocks capitalized on that 6 play, 70 yard drive that was keyed by Shaw. He broke off a 29 yard run, threw a 25 yard pass to Rory Anderson, and then scored on a 1 yard sneak to put the Gamecocks ahead 21-17 with 2:50 left in the quarter.
USC had 163 total yards in the quarter to Tennessee’s 44. Davis has 132 rushing yards at the end of the quarter, his sixth game of the season of over 100 rushing yards.
