The teams exchanged punts to open the game and then Tennessee got on the board first. Helped by a targeting call against Kadetrix Marcus which led to his ejection, the Vols reached the USC 21. But the Gamecock defense held and the Vols settled for a 37 yard field goal by Michael Palardy.
The Gamecock offense was hampered by poor field position throughout the quarter but a 45 yard run by Mike Davis game them some life at the Vols 44. But on the next play Connor Shaw lost the snap and the Vols recovered.
There were no other scoring threats in the quarter. USC had 81 yards in the quarter, 72 rushing by Mike Davis. Tennessee had just 37 yards.
