Syracuse opened the quarter with a splash. On the first play, Jerome Smith burst thru the Clemson defense for a 66 yard touchdown run. Smith finished the first quarter on a similar run that netted 17 yards. Clemson 21-Syracuse 7.
The Tigers turned a Syracuse turnover into a score later in the quarter. Baushad Breeland set up the offense at the Clemson 32 by intercepting Terrell Hunt along the sideline in front of the Clemson bench. The Tigers need only 5 plays to score. Boyd hit tight end Stanton Seckinger for 17 yards and the touchdown. Seckinger had 2 catches for 30 yards on the drive. Clemson 28-7. Boyd is 13-15 for 264 yards and 3 touchdowns.
And he continued to play pitch and catch with his receivers on the next possession. This time Boyd hooked up for the first time in the game with Martavis Bryant for a 40 yard score. The Orange secondary continues to bite on the play action fake in the backfield allowing Clemson’s receivers to get behind them. Clemson 35-7.
The Tigers had a chance to tag on another touchdown late in the quarter but on fourth and goal from the 5 Boyd was sacked.
Clemson had 439 yards in the half with Boyd passing for 363 yards and 4 touchdowns.
