USC football coach Steve Spurrier held his first weekly news conference of the 2013 season Sunday afternoon at Williams-Brice Stadium. The Gamecocks open the season Thursday night at home against North Carolina. The game will be televised on ESPN with kickoff at 6:00 PM.
The Gamecocks are ranked as high as 6th in the pre-season polls and will be the highest ranked team the Tar Heels have faced since 2005. This will be the 56th meeting between the old ACC rivals. The Tar Heels hold a 34-17-4 advantage in the series. USC won the last meeting in 2007 in Chapel Hill 21-15. The teams last played in Columbia in 1990, a 27-5 USC victory.
Spurrier is 4-0 in his career against North Carolina. Tar Heel second year coach Larry Fedora is 0-1 against USC having lost in Columbia when he was the head coach at Southern Miss in 2010.
Spurrier press conference highlights:
UNC could have been 10-2 last season.
UNC is a “talented bunch of guys.” Likes the QB and receivers.
USC will be “pretty healthy.” Doubts Rory Anderson will be available but expects Jerrell Adams and Bruce Ellington to play.
Wishes they were throwing and catching better than they have in camp. Elliott Fry looks like the kicker. Had a good day Saturday.
Feels Clowney is ready to go. Let the team in sprints yesterday. Feels the team is ready to go.
Thinks the young linebackers will be ready to go Thursday night.
They recruited Quinshad Davis hard but he just chose to go to UNC.
Hope to give Mike Davis a lot of runs, Brandon Wilds too. Shon Carson will get some carries.
Little chance LB Cedrick Cooper (elbow) will play Thursday night.
OL was better last week when Clowney was not in there.
