Newberry College and Charleston Southern University have announced an agreement for a home-and-home football series between the two schools for the 2014 and 2015 seasons.
The Charleston Southern Buccaneers will host the first game of the two-year contract on September 6, 2014, while the Newberry Wolves will host the second game on September 12, 2015.
The two-game contract will renew a series which been dormant since the 1999 season. Newberry holds a 7-1 lead in the all-time series and won the last six meetings between the two schools.
CSU is an NCAA Division I – Football Championship Subdivision institution and is a member of the Big South Conference, while Newberry is an NCAA Division II institution and is a member of the South Atlantic Conference.
The 2014 meeting will be Newberry’s first trip to the Lowcountry since visiting CSU in 1998. The scarlet and gray are 4-0 all-time at CSU’s Buccaneer Field.
“We are pleased we can renew the series with Charleston Southern in 2014, as a large number of our current students are from the Charleston area,” Newberry director of athletics Matt Finley said. “We also have a great base of alumni in the Lowcountry who will have a short trip to support our team at this game. It’s also a very easy trip for most of our in-state supporters and I know we will have a big show of support in scarlet and gray on September 6, 2014.”
The 2015 meeting at Newberry will mark the first time the Wolves have hosted a Division I scholarship team at historic Setzler Field since defeating Coastal Carolina 21-7 in 2004. Since joining NCAA Division II prior to the 1992 football season, Newberry is 5-4 at Setzler Field against Division I teams, with a 3-1 record against the Buccaneers.
“I’m very excited about the opportunity to host CSU for the 2015 game,” Finley said. “It’s not very often that a Division II school gets to host a Division I team, and this game will be a great chance for us to show off Newberry College and our community with a school from another division coming to town.”
