DL Abu Lamin of Fort Scott JC, KS has taken three official visits and has plans set for his fourth. Lamin says he will visit Auburn this Thursday. He visited Arkansas last weekend. He has also been to USC and Florida. He has said that Tennessee will also get an official visit. Lamin hopes to get in his official visits this summer so he can make his decision before the season. He came out of last week’s trip still favoring USC.
DL Peyton Newell of Hiawatha, KS will make his decision next month between USC and Nebraska without taking a final trip to Columbia. Newell had hoped to make it in for Friday’s Black Magic Camp but said Tuesday night he won’t be able to make it. “I won’t be able to because it’s my grandmother’s birthday weekend,” Newell said. However, he did have a long conversation with Gamecock coaches Tuesday night. “I just spent thirty minutes on the phone with the coaches so I’m still very interested. We just talked about how important I am to this class and things like that.” Newell visited USC in March and Nebraska in June. He will announce the choice at his school August 30th and said there is no leader.
South Aiken QB Bo Baldwin will be at USC’s camp Friday and will literally be working out for an offer. The Gamecocks interest in Baldwin perked up following his performance at a seven on seven event hosted by USC and he was invited back for the Black Magic Camp for a chance to further impress Steve Spurrier and GA Mangus. And he hopes to take advantage of the opportunity. “I think there will be a decision on whether they will offer or not offer or greyshirt, I think something’s going to be decided Friday,” said South Aiken coach Jeremy West. “They seem pretty interested and we’re hearing from other people in the state that they are pretty interested. I hope it all works out.” South Aiken junior DE Rasool Clemmons will also workout at the Black Magic Camp. USC has not yet offered. Clemmons camped at Florida State last week and has offers from FSU, Clemson and Virginia.
Junior OL Brian Chaffin (6-2 270) of Charlotte attended a camp at USC this summer and likes what the Gamecocks have to offer. He has built a good relationship with USC assistant Shawn Elliott. “Coach Elliott and I have gotten to know each other and I really like him,” said Chaffin. “I like South Carolina and have a couple of friends that are students down there. They have a great atmosphere and obviously they play in the SEC.” The Gamecocks like Chaffin at center. His offers are from Mississippi State and Charlotte with interest from several schools including USC. He has camped at Florida, Georgia, NC State and Michigan and he heads to Mississippi State this weekend for an unofficial visit. “I’m looking forward to getting down there to see the school and see what they have to offer,” he said. “They like me at center as well and they told my coach they like how I get off the line. I also have a 4.0 (G.P.A) and they like that too.” Chaffin would like to attend a game in Columbia this fall. He named a top five of USC, Mississippi State, Georgia, NC State and Charlotte in no order.
