DL Dexter Wideman of Saluda, considered the state’s top defensive line prospect in the 2014 class, announced late Monday night he has committed to Florida State. Wideman tweeted out his decision near midnight Monday. The commitment comes as a bit of a surprise as most observers felt USC was the leader for Wideman. Last Sunday he listed USC, Florida State and Florida as his three favorites and he said he would take his official visits before deciding. But he attended a camp at Florida State last week and decided to make the call for the ‘Noles. However, as of Tuesday he was planning to attend USC’s Black Magic Camp on Friday. Wideman also had offers from Clemson, Michigan, Ole Miss and Alabama.
Byrnes QB Shuler Bentley, who is committed to Old Dominion, has picked up an offer from Cincinnati.
DL Cory Thomas of McCalla, AL has a final four of Clemson, Mississippi State, Florida and Tennessee. He camped at Mississippi State last Friday. He plans to announce on August 2nd.
Junior OL Brian Chaffin (6-2 270) of Charlotte attended a camp at USC this summer and likes what the Gamecocks have to offer. He has built a good relationship with USC assistant Shawn Elliott. “Coach Elliott and I have gotten to know each other and I really like him,” said Chaffin. “I like South Carolina and have a couple of friends that are students down there. They have a great atmosphere and obviously they play in the SEC.” The Gamecocks like Chaffin at center. His offers are from Mississippi State and Charlotte with interest from several schools including USC. He has camped at Florida, Georgia, NC State and Michigan and he heads to Mississippi State this weekend for an unofficial visit. “I’m looking forward to getting down there to see the school and see what they have to offer,” he said. “They like me at center as well and they told my coach they like how I get off the line. I also have a 4.0 (G.P.A) and they like that too.” Chaffin would like to attend a game in Columbia this fall. He named a top five of USC, Mississippi State, Georgia, NC State and Charlotte in no order.
Junior DL Albert Huggins of Orangeburg-Wilkinson said Monday night he will attend USC’s Black Magic Camp this Friday. Huggins also was invited to Florida’s Friday Night Lights camp this Friday but opted to go to USC. Huggins is one of the nation’s top defensive line prospects in the 2015 class with offers from USC, Clemson, Florida State, Florida, Alabama, Tennessee, Louisville, Georgia, NC State and North Carolina. He camped at Clemson in June. At this point Huggins has not fashioned a favorite’s list. “Everybody is equal,” he said.
Class of 2015 WR Michael Bowman (5-10 195) of Havelock, NC already has an offer from USC and will attend a camp in Columbia Friday, His other offers are North Carolina, NC State and East Carolina with interest from Clemson and Ohio State. “I camped at UNC..the Fedora camp…last week,” he said. “It’s one of the schools I like.” Bowman has visited USC before and says the Gamecocks are a school of interest. “I like the facilities there and it’s a good program,” said Bowman. “The coaches just keep asking me when I am coming back (for a visit).” The camp on Friday will be his first time back at USC. Bowman does not have any favorites and says he is interested in Clemson as well. “I haven’t talked to anyone from Clemson yet,” he said. “They’re talking to my coach. I like the offense they run and I want to visit there.” He has also visited Ohio State and NC State.
