A record 243 votes were cast at SEC Media Days and the voters placed USC second in the East Division behind Georgia. The Gamecocks received 75 first place votes but were nearly doubled by Georgia’s 149. Florida was picked third with 19 first place votes.
Alabama was the overwhelming favorite to win the West with 225 first place votes. Texas A&M was second with 11 and LSU third with 7.
Alabama was the clear choice for league champion with 182 votes. Georgia was next with 38 and USC was third with 18
Defensive end Jadeveon Clowney and all purpose specialist Bruce Ellington were the only Gamecocks voted onto the first team of the pre-season All-SEC team. Clowney was not a unanimous first team choice as 20 voters left him off the ballot but his 223 votes were the second most received by any individual. Alabama linebacker C.J. Mosely picked up 231 votes. Ellington was also voted as the second team return specialist.
Tight end Rory Anderson was voted onto the second team and offensive guard AJ Cann was named to the third team.
Heisman Trophy winner Johnny Manziel of Texas A&M was voted as the first team quarterback with Alabama’s AJ McCarron the second team selection and Georgia’s Aaron Murray the third teamer. Alabama’s TJ Yeldon and Georgia’s Todd Gurley make up the first team running backs.
