It was bad enough having to deal Tuesday afternoon with the outright fictitious piece of garbage written by someone named Cameron Smith at Yahoo Sports regarding USC commitment Arden Key’s quote, “The academic part, it’s like you have to try to fail.” But to hear ESPN college football analyst Rod Gilmore criticize Key was more than I can take.
I was running thru the channels to catch the CWS score during a break in the NBA game, and I caught the very end of Gilmore’s comments. He basically accused Key of choosing USC because he thinks it will be an easy ride academically. I could not believe my ears.
This is what we’ve become as a sports nation. An analyst on the self proclaimed “Worldwide Leader in Sports” criticizing an 11th grade football player based on internet stories. Doesn’t matter that those stories were complete wrong. Doesn’t matter than any college football fan, much less a purported expert, knows exactly what Key was saying.
Shame on you Rod Gilmore. You should know better. Shame on you ESPN. Do you not fact check before going on the air with such a story.
And shame on you Cameron Smith. Your lame attempts to apologize for your “work” just doesn’t cut it. You and your fellow bloodsuckers on internet blogs created a firestorm from nothing for the sole purpose of drawing traffic to your putrid URLs.
Congratulations, you accomplished that. You also manged to defame a young man who is an outstanding student and was simply saying that USC provides its athletes so much academic support, “it’s like you have to try to fail.”
Apparently, that needs to be spelled out for you, because it’s obvious that if it’s not, you’ll just make it up.
