The USC-UNC rivalry, basically dead since the Gamecocks left the ACC following the 1971 season, is coming back to life in a big way, at least for the next few months. Of course, the football teams will open the season in Columbia in late August. To wet everyone’s appetite for that, the baseball teams will square off this weekend in Chapel Hill in a Super Regional.
Both won games Monday to advance. Well actually, North Carolina started its game on Monday and finished on Tuesday. The Gamecocks completed a win over Liberty in a game that began Sunday night but was suspended by rain to take their regional in three games.
The Tar Heels played a decisive game against Florida Atlantic, and it was one for the ages. It took 13 innings for the nation’s top ranked team to put away the Owls 12-11.
The best of three Chapel Hill Super Regional will begin Friday at 1:00 PM on ESPN2. Game two will be Saturday at Noon on ESPN. And if a third game is required, it would be played Sunday at Noon on ESPN.
USC will be playing for its fourth straight trip to Omaha. The Gamecocks are in the Supers for the 11th time in 14 years.
UNC leads the all time series with USC 55-35-1. The teams last met in 2007 in a Super Regional in Chapel Hill which the Tar Heels won in three games. That’s the last time USC lost a Super Regional. The Gamecocks did not make the Supers in 2008 and 2009. In 2010 they won at Coastal Carolina. In 2011 they defeated Connecticut in Columbia. And in 2012 they won over Oklahoma in Columbia.
This will be a homecoming for Gamecock head coach Chad Holbrook. He played and coached for the Tar Heels before joining the Gamecock staff in July 2008.
