USC and Liberty will have to wait until Monday to decide the Columbia regional. The Gamecocks were leading the Flames 4-2 going to the bottom of the fifth inning when a lightening delay stopped play at 8:32 PM. The field was covered with the tarp and around 10:45 PM heavy rain hit the stadium area. The game was suspended at 11:05 PM and scheduled for a 1:05 PM restart on Monday afternoon.
Tickets from Sunday’s game will be accepted for the completion of the game on Monday. The game will be televised on ESPNU and ESPN3.
The Gamecocks took the early lead with a run in the first on an RBI single by LB Dantzler, his first hit of the regional. With two outs and runners on the corners, the Gamecocks attempted a double steal and Joey Pankake was thrown out at home to end the inning.
The Gamecocks put a three spot on the board in the third to make it a 4-0 game. Tanner English led off with a ground rules double to left center. With two outs, Pankake singled English home for the first run. Next up, Dantzler doubled to plate Pankake. Dantler later would score on a single by Kyle Martin.
The Flames got to Gamecock starter Jack Wynkoop in the fourth. With one out, a single, a double and a walk loaded the bases. Nick Paxton drove in the first run for Liberty with a single thru the right side. Dalton Britt then followed with a sacrifice fly to center to make it a 4-2 USC lead. Wynkoop got out of the inning by getting Jake Kimble to pop up to right field.
Wynkoop gave up a leadoff single in the fifth and was lifted for Colby Holmes and he retired the side without any damage. Lightening then made its way into the stadium area and play was called at 8:32 PM as the game moved to the bottom of the fifth.
