Turns out Steve Spurrier was bluffing when he said Jadeveon Clowney wouldn’t be playing in USC’s Garnet and Black game. Clowney was wearing shorts and sneakers when he came off the sideline and caught a pass from freshman quarterback Connor Mitch in the second half. Clowney managed to secure the catch but he didn’t quite make it to the end zone before his shoes slipped on the turf sending him to the ground a few yards short of the goal line. No worries, he got up, walked in and proceeded to chuck the ball into the West stands.
The officials didn’t call a penalty for Clowney coming off the sideline. They didn’t call him down by contact when he slipped, and they didn’t flag him for excessive celebration for tossing the ball to a fan.
The result of the play: Touchdown!
The only thing the play was missing was the Heisman pose.
That stiff neck and back the national media have been fretting about this week sure didn’t seem like an issue Saturday. In fact, Clowney said he hopes to be cleared to return to working out early next week.
