Former College of Charleston head basketball coach John Kresse joined us tonight on Sportstalk to tell us what he’s got going on nowadays in his life and, of course, discuss the rise of protegé, Wichita State head basketball coach Gregg Marshall.
Marshall just might be the hottest coaching name in America. The Greenwood native has his Shockers in the Final Four, where they’ll take on the top overall seed Louisville on Saturday night at the Georgia Dome in Atlanta.
Marshall spent 8 seasons under the tutelage of Kresse from 1988-1996, then spent two seasons as an assistant at Marshall University, before taking over the head coaching duties at Winthrop in 1998. Marshall made his name with the Eagles, making 7 tournament appearances at Winthrop. He left for Wichita State in 2007, and has his Shockers in the tournament for the 2nd straight season.
Kresse took us inside what makes Marshall so succesful tonight, told us his plans for the Final Four (he’ll be in Atlanta sitting right next to Marshall’s wife, Lynn), and took some time to talk about the school he spent 23 years building into a power.
