USC pitching coach Jerry Meyers told SportsTalk they are taking a cautious approach bringing back ace lefty Jordan Montgomery back to live action. There is still no timetable on when he will be back in the rotation. The earliest would be Sunday against Tennessee, but that is far from a certainty.
Montogmery was shut down after an impressive performance against Clemson last month because of a stress reaction in his pitching arm. He resumed throwing a little over a week ago and had his first bullpen session Friday. He was slated to throw another bullpen session Monday, but that was pushed back a day because of some soreness. Meyers said it was just a precaution and not a setback.
Regardless of Montgomery’s status the Gamecocks will likely shift their rotation this weekend. Meyers said Nolan Belcher could move up into the Friday slot and Evan Beal move to Saturday. That would make Sunday a TBA situation with Colby Holmes, Jack Wyncoop or perhaps Montgomery going Sunday. Holmes will start for the Gamecocks tonight against Charleston Southern.
