Arkansas started the season as the top ranked team in college baseball, but stumbled a bit out of the gate. Friday night they looked the part. The 21st ranked Razorbacks throttled #5 USC 15-3 in the opening game of their series at Carolina Stadium.
Almost everyone expected runs to be at a premium in this series and for the first four innings that was the script. The game was scoreless in the top of the 4th when things spiraled out of control for starter Evan Beal. The inning started with three straight Arkansas hits and the flood gates opened when Beal couldn’t find the strike zone. By the time the dust settled Beal walked four, threw a wild pitch and gave up eight runs. By the time the inning ended Arkansas was up 9-0 and the game was essentially over.
The Gamecocks scored three runs in the sixth to cut into the lead, but they never made a serious threat after the disaster in the fourth.
- Max Schrock and TJ Costen both missed the game because of what Holbrook called a nasty virus or food poisoning.
- Outfielder Tanner English returned to the lineup. He’s been limited the past few weeks because of a rotator cuff injury. He had a hit and walked twice Friday.
- Joey Pankake singled in the sixth and has now reached base safely in 14 straight games.
