Clemson is off to a flying start in ACC play. The Tigers defeated NC State 7-4 Saturday in Raleigh to clinch a series victory against a team ranked in the top 10 and expected to be a strong contender for the ACC title. But it’s the Tigers who are looking like the title contender as they improve their overall record to 9-4.
Thomas Brittle’s grand slam in the second inning propelled the Tigers to the lead after State had taken a 1-0 lead and their pitchers stranded 15 State baserunners. The Wolfpack out hit the Tigers 16-6 but five Clemson pitchers combined to allow only four of those runners to score. Clemson was aided offensively by nine walks and two hit batters.
Kyle Schnell earned his first career victory for Clemson with 2.2 innings of scoreless relief. Matt Campbell worked a perfect 9th inning for his fourth save.
Game three of the series will be Sunday at 1:00 PM. Scott Firth will start for Clemson.
