Sophomore guard Arlon Harper scored a career high 33 points to lead Charleston Southern past VMI 71-65 Saturday in the semi-finals of the Big South Tournament at Coastal Carolina University. The Bucs will play Sunday for the championship for the first time since 2005 and for the first time under head coach Barclay Radebaugh.
Charleston Southern trailed 30-25 at halftime but held the Keydets without a field goal for the first five minutes of the second half. By then the Bucs had built a 39-32 lead. Harper’s three pointer with 8:55 to play put CSU up 57-47. VMI pulled to within two thanks to a three point play by Rodney Glasgow with 25 second left. But Harper canned four free throws to account for the final margin of victory.
Harper hit half of his 20 field goal attempts and was 5-8 from three. He was perfect on eight free throw attempts. Glasgow led VMI with a career high 31 points. The Keydets Stan Okoye, the league’s leading scorer and MVP, was held to 12 points.
The Buccaneers will play Liberty in Sunday’s title game at Noon on ESPN2. The Flames downed Gardner-Webb Saturday 65-62.
