Charleston Southern defeated Winthrop for the first time in eight meetings in the Big South men’s basketball tournament Thursday 54-47 to reach the tournament semi-finals on Saturday. The Bucs will face VMI, a 90-86 winner over Longwood.
Charleston Southern is in the semis for the second straight season and for the third time under coach Barclay Radebaugh.
The Bucs struggled with their shooting making just 28% of their attempts, but they clamped down defensively on the Eagles and also pounded them on the boards 45-28.
Mathiang Muo led Charleston Southern with 15 points and 11 rebounds. Arlon Harper added 11 points and 5 rebounds.
Charleston Southern is 18-11. As the #1 seed in the tournament, the Bucs are guaranteed a spot in the NIT if they don’t make the NCAA Tournament.
