Brenton Williams scored a career high 22 points to lead USC to an 88-76 win over Rider Monday night at the Colonial Life Arena. Williams was one of four Gamecocks to score in double figures. Minda Kacinas also had a career high 18 points. Lakeem Jackson added 14 points and LaShay Page had 12. Rider’s Nurideen Lindsay led all scorers with 26.
Both teams shot over 50% with the Gamecocks finishing with a season high 53%. The Gamecocks had 22 assists on their 32 baskets. And they had their best three point shooting night of the season going 13-27 behind the stripe.
USC led 44-37 at the break and never trailed. The lead ballooned to 20 with three minutes to go until Rider made a late run to get back to within 10. It was the defensive break downs like that throughout the game that took away the joy of a win from Gamecock coach Frank Martin.
“Happy that we’re 3-0 but we’re playing with fool’s gold,” Martin said. “Right now we’re depending on the ball going in the basket to win. Right now we’re not controlling what we can control. We’re dealing with fool’s gold right now and that’s got to change. Our inability to guard anybody is frightening.”
