The USC football team is dealing with the loss of its offensive stalwart and team leader Marcus Lattimore who was lost for the season last Saturday at Mississippi State with a knee injury. Lattimore had rushed for over 800 yards and 11 touchdowns this season. But beyond the numbers, his presence on the field seem to give the offense a sense of security. With Lattimore gone, his teammates on the unit realize others will have to step up to try to fill the void.
The Gamecocks are averaging over 32 points per game. They have scored 227 points, but 110 of the points came in two games, East Carolina and Kentucky. So, they have averaged 23 points per game in their other five games. The Gamecocks are last in the SEC in red zone offense scoring on 73.9 percent of their visits…17 touchdowns in 23 trips, no field goals and four turnovers.
The Gamecocks defensive numbers remain good. They lead the SEC in pass defense allowing 133.7 yards per game, and they are fourth in total defense at 277.6 yards per game. USC is fourth in scoring defense at 19.1 points per game. The Gamecocks’ 14 interceptions rank them second in the league.
The Gamecocks will practice thru Thursday and then will be off for the rest of the week. They play at Tennessee a week from Saturday at 7:15 PM. The TV outlet will be announced this weekend.
