Here is a shocker: Clemson wide receiver Sammy Watkins is the ACC receiver and rookie of the week. Stunning, eh? All Watkins did was amass a school record 345 all-purpose yards (fourth highest in ACC history) and score three touchdowns in an 18 point comeback win over Maryland Saturday night. Watkins caught eight passes for 105 yards and two scores and he returned a kick 89 yards for a touchdown in the win. They could have announced this award late in the fourth quarter in College Park.
Watkins performance overshadowed an outstanding game by running back Andre Ellington, who was named the ACC offensive back of the week. Ellington rushed for a career high 212 yards on 22 carries. He scored twice, including on a 44 yarder to put the game away in the fourth quarter.
Clemson will play North Carolina Saturday at noon in Death Valley.
