DE Jhaustin Thomas of Decatur, GA committed to USC Saturday while on an unofficial visit with the Gamecocks. Thomas met with USC head coach Steve Spurrier and recruiter Lorenzo Ward prior to the game with Auburn and made his pledge. Ironically, Thomas had narrowed his choice to the Gamecocks and Tigers. This was a come from behind recruiting victory for the Gamecocks as Auburn had led for much of the summer and early fall. Thomas also is a quality basketball player and has talked about playing both sports in college. He also strongly considered Alabama, Tennessee and Florida. Thomas is rated among the top prospects in Georgia for the 2012 class. He had 14 sacks as a junior. His commitment gives the Gamecocks a total of 23 for the 2012 class including three players the Gamecocks placed in prep school for this season.
The Gamecocks also have a conditional commitment from RB Virgil Smalls (5-11 270) of Goose Creek. “He’s going to USC,” Goose Creek coach Chuck Reedy said Friday night. “They have offered and he has committed pending him qualifying. If he qualifies and they don’t have room, he’ll greyshirt.” Smalls is the brother of USC freshman offensive tackle Brandon Shell. He has scored 14 touchdowns this season. Last season he rushed for 1300 yards with 25 touchdowns. And he delivered 86 pancake blocks. “He’s physical, “Reedy said. “He’s intimidating.” These additions would give the Gamecocks 23 players in the class including three they placed in prep school.
ATH Chris Moody of McDonough, GA made an unofficial visit to USC Saturday. The Gamecocks have recruited him as a defensive back. At this point, he’s not a player the Gamecocks plan to sign because of their current commitments for the secondary and the expected addition of DB Chaz Elder. Moody is scheduled for an official visit to Memphis October 15h.
DL Jonathan Bullard of Boiling Springs, NC has narrowed his list to USC, Clemson, Florida, Nebraska and Tennessee. Bullard was going to visit Nebraska this coming weekend but has rescheduled that visit for later in the season. He had planned to make an unofficial visit to USC Saturday but could not make it because he was taking the SAT.
