Auburn started the fourth quarter on facing a second and eight on the USC 39 yard line. Behind strong running by Michael Dyer the Tigers moved the ball to the Gamecocks 11 yard line. Facing a third down Barrett Trotter took a shot at the end zone and was intercepted by C.C. Whitlock. Whitlock held on to the ball this time and USC took over on its own 20.
USC picked up one first down before they were forced to punt. Stephen Garcia threw an errant pass to Alshon Jeffery, one that landed five yards out of bounds, then he was sacked, then he threw incomplete and short to Marcus Lattimore.
Auburn took over 1st and 10 on its own 29 following the USC punt. The Tigers picked up one first down and then punted from its own 47. USC took over on its own 12 yard line with 7:07 left in the quarter.
USC didn’t do much with its possession. In fact, they did nothing. They did not gain a yard and punted three plays later.
After a 45 yard punt Auburn took over on its own 43. The Tigers converted a third and ten on the first series to move into Gamecock territory. The converted a third and two on the next series to move the ball to the Carolina 34 yard line. On the next series the Tigers converted a third and nine with a 19 yard run to the USC 14 yard line with 2:47 left in the game. Auburn then converted a third and five for a nine yard touchdown pass to take the lead with 1:38 left in the game. The extra point put Auburn up 16-13.
USC started its final possession on its own 20 yard line with 1:38 left. The Gamecocks managed to cross midfield but were unable to get into field goal range before time expired.
