USC’s effort to honor the troops ended up being a dud. The SEC made USC change its special camouflaged Wounded Warrior jerseys just before kickoff because the numbers were almost impossible to see. Why no one thought this could be an issue earlier this week is beyond me. Regardless, the SEC decided that seeing the jersey numbers was more important than honoring the troops. Why do you hate America, SEC?
So on to the game. The Gamecocks received to start the game and proceeded to go three and out. Stephen Garcia completed his first pass, a short one, to Alshon Jeffery. That was followed by a short run by Marcus Lattimore and an incomplete pass intended for Jeffery on third and four.
USC interfered with the return man on the punt and Auburn began its first drive on the 50 yard line. The Tigers converted a couple of third down plays and moved inside the Gamecock five yard line after a personal foul penalty against USC for a late hit. The Carolina defense held on the next three plays forcing Auburn to settle for a 21 yard field goal to go up 3-0 with 10:12 left in the first quarter.
USC turned the ball over on its next possession. Marcus Lattimore lost the ball and Auburn recovered on the Gamecock 36. That is Lattimore’s second fumble of the season. He only fumbled once all of last year.
The turnover didn’t hurt USC though as Auburn quarterback Barrett Trotter threw an interception on the Tigers second play from scrimmage. Antonio Allen made the pick for the Gamecocks and returned it 18 yards to the 31 yard line.
It only took USC four plays to go 69 yards and find the endzone. USC moved the ball to midfield in three plays and from there Stephen Garcia tossed a 50 yard strike to Alshon Jeffery to put the Gamecocks up 6-3. Jay Wooten’s extra point was blocked.
The Gamecock defense forced Auburn to a three and out on the Tigers next possession. Melvin Ingram sacked Barrett Trotter on third down to force the punt.
After the punt USC took over on its own 38 yard line and was unable to pick up a first down.
Following a Gamecock punt Auburn took possession and took the ball down to the Carolina 25 yard line when the quarter ended.
FIRST QUARTER SCORE: USC 6, AUBURN 3.
