Florida State takes the opening kickoff and using a mixture of Chris Thompson in the Wildcat and Clint Trickett in the shotgun, the Seminoles went down the field until the drive stalled at the Clemson 14. Dustin Hopkins hit a 32 yard field goal to give FSU a 3-0 lead with 10:23 left in the quarter.
That lead was short lived. Clemson marched right down the field with a crisp 80 yard drive. Tajh Boyd hit Sammy Watkins with a 20 yard pass to move the Tigers deep in to FSU territory, then hooked up with him for a 24 yard scoring pass. That was Watkins’ 5th touchdown catch of the season, a Clemson freshman record. With 7:47 left in the quarter, Clemson 7-3.
A mistake by Florida State on a Clemson punt came back to cost the Seminoles. The Noles ran into Clemson punter Dawson Zimmerman keeping alive the Clemson drive. On the next play, Boyd hit DeAndre Hopkins with a 50 yard pass to the FSU 2. Two plays later, Boyd pushed his way in to the endzone from the one for the touchdown. With 1:54 left in the quarter, Clemson 14-3.
Florida State responded with a flourish. Trickett found Rodney Smith with a step on Darius Robinson on the post pattern and hit him in stride for a 57 yard touchdown with :14 left in the quarter. Clemson still leads 14-10.
End of quarter, Clemson 14-10. Clemson had 147 yards in the quarter, FSU 143.
