A few quick notes from Steve Spurrier’s Sunday afternoon conference call with beat reporters:
Spurrier said his team came out of the Navy game injury free. He reiterated they feel fortunate to have won Saturday night after twice miscuing in the red zone. The HBC said he keeps thinking they are capable of passing the ball but it’s not happening for them. “It is what it is, as they say,” he said.
Spurrier said Vanderbilt is playing fundamentally sound defense and tackling well. He said Vandy looks as good as any defense in the nation. As for his defense, Spurrier said he would like to see them play with more intensity and be sounder in their assignments. He did give the defense credit for making the stops against Navy in the fourth quarter.
Spurrier on Vanderbilt being 3-0: We were hoping everyone was going to be down like they all said they would be. Vandy isn’t down. Florida isn’t down. …all of that preseason hype is just that.
Spurrier said a lot of teams get better as the season moves along and he is hopeful his team will too.
Spurrier said, somewhat sarcastically, that maybe they should hope for a close game because they have done well in those the past two weeks.
The HBC said Stephen Garcia did “OK” against Navy. He didn’t seem too upset with the play of his quarterback.
