Clemson came out of the halftime break on fire. Tajh Boyd hit Sammy Watkins with a short pass over the middle, and the freshman speedster did the rest outrunning the Auburn defense for a 65 yard score. With 13:45 left in the quarter, Clemson has its first lead at 28-21.
Clemson put together another well executed drive and appeared to be headed for its fifth straight touchdown until freshman Mike Bellamy coughed up the ball at the end of a nine yard run at the Auburn 18 with 8:01 left in the quarter. Clemson had gone 70 yards in 11 plays.
Auburn turned the turnover into three points. The Tigers drove to the Clemson 20 before the drive stalled. Cody Parkey then split the uprights from 38 yards out. With 5:00 left in the quarter, Clemson leads 28-24.
Boyd’s career afternoon continued on the next drive. He already had set personal marks for passing yards, attempts and completions in a game. He added touchdown passes to the category with a 19 yarder to Sammy Watkins who used his great speed and an excellent block by DeAndre Hopkins to beat the Auburn defenders to the left pylon. With :16 left in the quarter, Clemson 35-Auburn 24.
Quarter ends with Clemson leading 35-24. After three quarters, Clemson has 67 plays for 465 yards. Boyd was 24-34 for 321 yards and 4 touchdowns.
