Here is your quick recap of the first quarter of USC and Navy:
Navy took the opening kickoff and picked up one first down before being forced to punt three plays later.
USC drove the ball to the Navy 35 but turned the ball over on downs after a short run by Marcus Lattimore and three incomplete passes from Stephen Garcia. That wasted a great 31 yard run by Lattimore to start the drive.
Navy’s Gee Gee Greene, a Richland Northeast alum, rushed for 30 yards to the Gamecock 35 on the Midshipmen’s first play after taking over. Two plays later they were in the endzone on a 27 yard rush by John Howell to put Navy up 7-0 with 7:43 left in the first quarter. The drive covered 65 yards in four plays and took 1:30 off the clock.
The Gamecocks answered on their next possession with a couple of passes to Jason Barnes and Bruce Ellington respectively followed by a steady does of Lattimore (five straight carries) into the endzone. It was the first time Carolina scored in the first quarter this season. The drive went 71 yards in seven plays and took 2:56 off the clock.
Navy was driving on its next possession…the Mids were facing a third and one from the Gamecock 29 as the quarter ended.
First quarter score: USC 7, Navy 7
