Clemson started the second quarter with a nice 15 yard run by Andre Ellington. That would prove to be one of the better plays of the quarter for Clemson. The Tigers punted three plays later.
After blazing out of the gates with a two play touchdown the Clemson offense settled into a deep rut. They went three-and-out on their next possession. After the defense made a stop the Tigers started their second possession of the quarter on their own 38. This drive ended with Tajh Boyd tossing an interception on third and long. The pick was returned 50 yards to the Tigers eight yard line.
The Clemson defense came through though and held the Trojans out of the end zone. They settled for a 21 yard field goal to cut the lead to 13-9 with 4:20 left in the half.
Next possession for Clemson? You guessed it, another three and out. The Tigers failed to convert a third and short making them 0-8 on third down conversions.
Troy found some holes on its final possession of the quarter and moved the ball right down the field and scored a touchdown on a 16 yard pass. The Trojans went 61 yards on 5 plays and tool 1:36 off the clock. With :51 seconds left in the half they had a 16-13 lead.
