The Gamecocks defense created its 5th turnover of the night early in the quarter when Melvin Ingram came up with his first career interception at the ECU 31. Garcia hit Alshon Jeffery for 23 yards to the eight and Marcus Lattimore took it from there with rushes of seven and one yards for his third score of the night and the 20th rushing touchdown of his brief career. With 10:42 left, USC leads 49-31.
The Gamecocks’ special teams got into the scoring parade later in the quarter. Ace Sanders took a punt back 68 yards for the Gamecocks’ first game of that type since Chavez Donnings against Florida in 2003. USC now leads 56-31 with 9:46 left.
The Pirates didn’t quit. They marched 72 yards in 19 plays for another touchdowns, a Dominique Davis four yard pass to Lance Lewis. The extra point was missed. USC leads 56-37 with 2:37 left.
