Most of us have taken Steve Spurrier’s reluctance to name a starting quarterback with a grain of salt. We thought it was more of Spurrier trying to keep Stephen Garcia motivated this preseason. But as we move closer to kick of this weekend it is looking more and more like the Head Ball Coach is seriously considering giving sophomore Connor Shaw the start over incumbent Stephen Garcia.
Today on the SEC teleconference Spurrier said he has an idea who he will start this Saturday night against East Carolina but still plans to wait until later this week to announce it. The competition remains open and the HBC says Shaw is making a solid case to start.
“Connor Shaw, like I said, has performed a little bit better than Stephen in all the scrimmages so don’t be surprised. It could be Connor Shaw.”
Goodness gracious. Playing quarterback for Steve Spurrier must be one of the hardest jobs in the world. So you are a fifth year senior and you have had your most committed and productive preseason camp to date? Yeah, well don’t be surprised if you don’t start pal.
One thing we do know is that whoever starts Saturday better not get too comfortable. Darth Visor loves to point out that he has won four SEC titles with teams that used two or more quarterbacks. Looks like he wants to try for five.
