DB Chaz Elder of College Park, GA is still working on a decision his coach said Wednesday. USC has been his favorite ahead of Georgia and Vanderbilt. “There are some things he wants to look at with some other people,” Ryan Andrews said. “He’s finishing that up.” Asked if USC was still out front, Andrews said, “You could say that. That’s not a definite. He took a second look at Georgia and Vanderbilt. Arizona State recently got in touch with him. He’s taking a step back before he makes a decision.” Andrews said there is no exact date for a decision but it will come before the first game August 26th. “He doesn’t want a lot of distractions,” Andrews said. Elder will not hold a news conference. Andrews said they will just notify the schools and media of his decision when it comes down.
DB Clinton Heaven (6-1 195) of Bradenton, FL has USC in his top four but is uncertain if the Gamecocks are still interested. They are USC, North Carolina, NC State and Vanderbilt. As for USC Heaven said, “I haven’t really heard from them in a while to tell you the truth. I don’t know if they’ve filled up at safety or if they don’t have a spot for me in this class.” An official visit to USC is a possibility for Heaven should they show interest. He recently visited North Carolina, NC State and Vanderbilt and it was the trip to Chapel Hill that stood out for him. “I just liked their facilities and their academics,” he said. “I loved the coaching staff.” Heaven is not concerned with the dismissal of Butch Davis. “My position coach Everett Withers is the interim coach and the rest of the staff is still there,” Heaven said. He has decided on two official visits and plans to take all five. He will return to Vanderbilt and UNC and is unsure of the other three. “I’ll commit when I know it’s right,” he added. Heaven has no favorite.
DB Shaquile Beverly (5-10 190) of Jacksonville committed to Troy several months ago but will continue to take visits with First Coast teammates WR Chris Black (5-11 175) and LB Reggie Northrup (6-2 218). Black is committed to Alabama and Northrup to Miami. Though the three have all committed, Beverly says they will take more trips. “I am committed but I want to take more visits and enjoy the recruiting process,” Beverly said. “We will all go together. That’s how we do it.” Beverly included First Coast LB Joseph Jackson, a West Virginia commitment, in that group. He named USC, Louisville, South Florida and Florida International as possible destinations. Northrup and Black each had offers from the Gamecocks.
6-8 Zach Auguste of Marlborough, MA has released a final eight. He tells ESPN.com the list is Clemson, Florida, Marquette, Georgia Tech, Notre Dame, West Virginia, Providence and Auburn.
USC has landed a commitment from SS/CF DJ Burt for the 2014 class.
