USC RB target I’Tavious Mathers of Murfreesboro, TN committed to Ole Miss Monday. Mathers visited USC earlier in the summer. He also considered Kentucky and Virginia in his final four.
DB Chaz Elder of Atlanta has been on commitment watch for a couple of weeks with USC out in front of Georgia and Vanderbilt. Sunday night, Elder said the end of this watch is near. “There’s nothing really new here,” he said. “USC leads. I’m looking to end this soon.” Elder said he would not hold a news conference but would just notify the schools. He did not have a definite date in mind deferring those plans to his head coach.
ATH Marty Williams of Fox Creek can’t bring himself to pull the trigger on a commitment just yet. According to his coach, Williams was supposed to do just that last week with Clemson. “We had it set up for Tuesday night,” Coach Russ Schneider said. “I talked to (Clemson recruiter) coach Harbison. But, he (Williams) told me in his heart he’s not ready to do it yet. It’s between him and his parents. He’s a scared 17 year old kid trying to make the right decision. He had not gotten the chance to sit down with his mom. He feels more comfortable talking to the family.” Williams has had Clemson at the top of his list with Florida and Miami also under consideration. Clemson has recruited him as strong safety. But Williams also plays quarterback and when he went to Florida’s camp, the Gators worked him out as a quarterback. “I think he wants to play quarterback somewhere,” Schneider said. “He might go somewhere smaller to do that. He’s playing with a lot of different things in his head. He’s got some time and he doesn’t want to make the wrong decision.”
DE Ty McCord of Tampa is not close to a decision and has not narrowed his list. He will do that in the next three to four weeks and will get down to between five and eight schools. But he does have a top three…USC, Florida and Southern Cal. “South Carolina is high on my list,” McCord said. “They (along with Florida and Southern Cal) will be on my final list.” McCord said he doesn’t have a favorite. He will not make his decision until January. Some of his other offers are Notre Dame, Texas Tech, Ole Miss, Rutgers, South Florida, Miami, Oregon and Georgia.
6-4 Kenny Gaines of Mableton, GA has trimmed his list to Clemson, USC, Georgia, Georgia Tech and Iowa. He’s not indicating a favorite and has not yet scheduled his official visits.
