Brand new park. Same old story. USC is college baseball champion again. It was hard, yet they made it look easy. The Gamecocks overcame more injuries than a roller derby team. But great pitching, oustanding defense, timely hitting, and a coaching staff with the knack for making the right moves proved to be a championship winning formula for this team.
Ray Tanner often said his club was not the most talented, but he probably would not trade a player on his roster. The unique chemistry developed thru a season full of strife often can make up for a lack of pure skill.
So, the Gamecocks need to make room in that national championship trophy case built last year at Carolina Stadium. The old trophy has company. They might have been won at different venues, but it was the same core values of what is now the nation’s best baseball program that brought them together.
Good bye from Omaha.
