Sunday was supposed to be a day of rest, sort of, at the CWS. A news conference with both teams, USC and Florida. A final workout for both at TD Ameritrade Park. And then…boom. Ray Tanner drops the bombshell that Christian Walker might not be able to play because of a wrist injury. Bad, bad, bad news for the Gamecocks. I
know this team has overcome numerous injuries to important people this season. Each time, someone like a Marzilli, or a Neff or a Beary rose to the ocassions. But losing Walker would be a double whammy. Offensively, he leads the Gamecocks in the big three…batting average, home runs and RBI. But where they may feel his loss the most is on defense. Walker is nails with the glove. How many errors has he saved his fellow infielders this season?
Walker’s absence would no doubt be hard to overcome, but as those who have followed this team has learned, never count them out, even when the odds are stacked against them. And if Walker can’t play, an already favored Florida team gets an even greater advantage.
