The off day was just that for everybody. Well, almost everybody. The Gamecocks did have a brief workout at the Ultimate Baseball Academy in west Omaha. But there was no media availability, so your hard working members of the press from South Carolina took the time Saturday to pretty much do their own thing.
Several took in the zoo. Me? Real sleep for the first time in eight days, wash the clothes, and shoot a little basketball. Sunday, back to the grind as we hit the homestretch.
There will be a press conference for the head coaches and two players from each team at 11:00 AM local time at the stadium. USC will send Scott Wingo and Michael Roth to join Ray Tanner. Sunday the Gamecocks will hold their final scheduled practice of the season. It will be at TD Ameritrade Park from 1:40-3:10 PM local time.
We will know more then about Matt Price’s availability for Monday night. He threw 95 pitches Friday but the hope is he can recover enough to give the Gamecocks a few outs, if necessary, Monday night. It’s expected that freshman Forest Koumas will be the Gamecocks’ starter against North Carolina in the championship series opener.
By the way, the Gamecocks got much love in the Omaha World-Herald this morning. Price is featured on the front page of the sports section reacting to getting out of the bases loaded jam in the 13th inning Friday night. And the back page opens up to a full page spread shot of Adam Matthews being greeted at homeplate by Jake Williams after scoring the winning run Friday night.
Are two more celebrations in the Gamecocks’ future?
