The College World Series is down to a a final four of three teams from the SEC East and one from the ACC. Thursday night Virginia eliminated California 8-1 to move into Friday night’s game against USC. Friday’s first game will be Florida against Vanderbilt. USC and Florida need just one win to advance to the championship series starting Monday.
The Gamecocks defeated the Cavaliers Tuesday night 7-1 but Friday they will face the ace of the Cavalier’s staff in lefthander Danny Hultzen, the 2nd pick in this month’s draft. The Gamecocks have not announced their starter but are expected to go with their ace Michael Roth.
The Gamecocks will take a 13 game NCAA Tournament winning streak into Friday’s game, and they are the only undefeated team left in NCAA Tournament play this season. The last team to run thru a tournament undefeated was Miami in 2001.
Virginia’s Tyler Wilson shutout the Bears into the 8th inning Thursday night to earn the victory. The Cavaliers scored four runs in the sixth inning to break open a close game.
Florida and Vanderbilt also will be meeting for the second time in the CWS. The Gators won the first meeting 3-1. The if necessary games would be played on Saturday.
