It took more than three decades but USC found a way to shake its College World Series opening game issues. Heading into its CWS opener against Texas A&M the Gamecocks had lost seven straight openers in Omaha. Carolina’s last CWS opening game win was 1977. On Sunday Ray Tanner and the Gamecocks pulled that monkey of their backs with a 5-4 win over the Aggies.
Tanner has led to Omaha five times and in each of those trips the Gamecocks have one at least one game. Unlike the past four trips, this time Carolina is working out of the winner’s bracket. USC will play Virginia Tuesday night at 7:00 at TD Ameritrade Park.
