USC bunched together 10 runs in the third and fourth innings on its way to an 11-5 victory over the Hatters Saturday night at the Columbia Regional. The Gamecocks (47-14) are the only undefeated team in the regional and will earn a trip to the Super Regional with a win Sunday night over Stetson or NC State. Those two meet Sunday afternoon in an elimination game. Earlier Saturday NC State eliminated Georgia Southern 5-2.
Stetson took a 1-0 lead in the 2nd on Trey Blackman’s first homer of the season. The Hatters (42-19) held the lead until the USC explosion in the third and fourth innings. The Gamecocks sent 17 batters to the plate in the two big scoring innings batting around in the 3rd. The big blow was a grand slam by Robert Beary, his third homer of the season. That put the Gamecocks up 6-1.
In the fourth, Christian Walker had an RBI single, Jake Williams drove in two with a double, and Peter Mooney added a sacrifice fly.
The Gamecocks made it 11-1 in the 6th on Steven Neff’s 5th home run of the season. The Hatters scored three runs in the 7th and one in the 9th to account for their final score.
(Ray Tanner, Evan Marzilli, Robert Beary, Colby Holmes)
Colby Holmes pitched into the 7th inning to earn the win. He allowed seven hits and four runs. Tyler Webb, Jose Mata, Bryan Harper and John Taylor also worked for the Gamecocks. Stetson starter Will Dorsey took the loss.
Forrest Koumas will start Sunday night for the Gamecocks. He’s 6-1 with a 3.13 ERA this season. If the Gamecocks are forced to a Monday night game, Steven Neff would be the likely starter.
