The second ranked USC baseball team scored a run in the ninth to edge Auburn 2-1 Friday night in front of 8,016 fans at Carolina Stadium. Scott Wingo drove in the winning run with one out in the ninth to give the Gamecocks their 15th SEC win of the season.
Michael Roth gave USC another quality start on the mound. He gave up seven hits in his eight innings of work. He allowed just one run and struck out six. He threw 124 pitches and ended up with a no-decision. John Taylor threw 11 pitches in the top of the ninth and earned his fourth win of the season (4-1) on the mound.
The Gamecocks bats were quiet most of the night but the defense was solid throughout. Peter Mooney made a few key plays and shortstop and Christian Walker, the reigning SEC player of the Week also made a few big digs to get keep Auburn from extending innings.
Robert Beary was hit by a pitch to lead off the ninth. A DeSean Anderson sacrifice bunt moved him to second. Mooney followed with a single and the Wingo won it with the single.
USC (33-8, 15-4) and Auburn (23-19, 9-10) will play again tomorrow night at 7:00. Colby Holmes will start on the mound for the Gamecocks. The Tigers will counter with Derek Varnadore. The game will be televised on Fox Sports.
The finale is Sunday at 3:00 in a game that will be televised nationally on ESPN.
